A full clearance of all 63 bulls offered at the Gowrie Simbrah and Simmental sale today was a great outcome for vendors, Noel and Jill Mobbs, whose happiness was evident at the end of the day.
The result meant an overall average of $5341 for the family running its 19th annual on-property bull sale.
Broken into breeds, the 46 Simbrah sold averaged $5543 and a top price of $12,000, while the 17 Gold Park Simmental bulls averaged $4794 and the top price of $6000 was paid three times.
Ross Shapcott, situated not far up the road from Gowrie, at Reynella, Augathella, was the buyer of Gowrie M083 (P) for $12,000.
Aged 25 months, the new sire, the son of successful show bull, Gowrie Gus, came into the sale ring weighing 740kg, with a scrotal circumference of 44cm, and semen morphology of 79 per cent.
Mr Shapcott, a repeat buyer and mainly a Droughtmaster breeder, said his newest purchase fitted in with his program, having a 60:40 Simmental-Brahman content.
“We only buy polls so he ticked that box, and we think he’ll put a bit more bone and muscle into our herd,” he said.
Mr Mobbs said his outstanding temperament would also stand the buyers in good stead.
Fellow repeat buyers and this year’s top volume buyers, based on price, Blackall’s JM Allan and Sons, were active bidders and took home the second top priced bull.
He was lot 3, Gowrie M176 (P), another of the bulls with 60:40 Simmental- Brahman content, who had been sired by Gowrie Grenade.
Aged 26 months, he was a solid 830kg, and had a scrotal circumference of 44cm and semen morphology of 79pc.
The three buyers stumping up $6000 each for Simmental bulls included Julia Creek’s Ryan and Tracey Hacon, who selected 30-month-old M270 (D) weighing 910kg; Winade Holdings of Quilpie, buying M306 (P) weighing 770kg at 28 months; and Mike and Ann Noon, Mitchell, purchasing M303 (P), who weighed 740kg at 28 months.
The Hacons matched the Allan family in purchasing six bulls all up, four Simbrah and two Simmentals, for a top price of $7500 for two of the Simbrah lots.
Winade Holdings took home five bulls while the Noons finished the day with four bulls, as did Ivan Hay, Taroom.
Mr Mobbs said it had been a great day.
“I appreciate all your support,” he said. “Numerically there’s not a lot of you – I think we only gave out 25 bid cards – but you’ve done us proud.”
He acknowledged that everyone was operating under difficult conditions but, as he has hopefully predicted at previous sales, said rain wasn’t far off.
A familiar sight, the “Gowrie Warblers”, consisting of Jill, her children and grandchildren, began the sale with the national anthem.
Attendees were also able to browse the clothing stall set up by Tricia Agar, Bridget Knight and Kaye Minnett to promote bush culture and the links between city and country.
