University student, Georgia Hunter, has been crowned the Cairns Miss Showgirl.
“I’m a little bit overwhelmed to be quite honest. I froze up on stage a little bit, I’m really happy” she said.
Georgia, 19, is studying Earth Sciences at James Cook University and said she hoped to gain employment as a hydrologist or soil scientist.
“Soil and water conservation are very important for the future of agricultural industries and this is important to me,” she said.
As far as show ambitions go, Georgia said she wanted to encourage younger members of the community to attend by involving them in competitions such as arts and crafts, photography, home economics and horticulture.
“But not only that, I want to show kids and parents that there is more to the Cairns Show than just rides and show bags and that a visit to the show does not need to be all about spending money – it is also a showcase of achievements.”
Rachael Davis received the runner-up sash and said she was thrilled for her good friend in taking out the top prize.
“I feel really good, I had a fantastic time. It feels like Christmas,” she said.
Rachael is an 18-year-old studying acting at CQ University.
Both winners will be representing the Cairns Show as ambassadors for the next 12 months and will enjoy learning about the massive effort it takes to host the largest rural agricultural show in Australia.
Georgia will represent the region at the state judging of the Queensland Country Life Miss Showgirl awards in Brisbane later this year.
The winner will attend the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth in Canada later in 2018.
Also receiving Cairns Show honours recently were Matthew Castino, the new Rural Ambassador, and Alyssa McNamara, Young Rural Ambassador.
Secretary-manager of the Cairns Show Association, Victoria Crosby, said they were proud so many young people entered these awards, which assured them the future was in great hands.
“It’s sending forth young people such as these into the community to promote the agricultural show movement in Far North Queensland that assures the future of such events like the Cairns Show,” she said.
The award winners will now represent the Cairns Show at special events and the Rural Ambassador, Matthew Castino will attend the Ingham sub-chamber meeting in May to compete for the regional Rural Ambassador title.
The Queensland Country Life Miss Showgirl presentation function was held in the De Jarlais Function Centre at the Cairns Showgrounds on Friday, April 20.
The Cairns Show is the largest community event in Cairns, with over 400 local industries promoting their products and services over three days.
