The Dajarra community came together to commemorate this Anzac Day at their newly unveiled Anzac Memorial.
The memorial is dedicated to local Indigenous First World War soldier Peter Craigie, and honours all Australian veterans.
With Peter Craigie’s youngest son Terry Craigie, his grandson Joe Rogers and great niece Shorty present, the tribute to servicemen and women past and present, held special meaning for the community and state school students.
School Principal Miebaka Dede and Sergeant Andrew Lloyd-Jones from Mount Isa Police organised the memorial service with help from students. There was a Welcome to Country, recital of poems, laying of wreaths and the flag raising ceremony.
A special tribute “Ode of a fallen soldier” was written and recited by Peter Craigie’s great-niece, Shorty.
Julie and Bob Guteridge attended on behalf of Cloncurry Shire Council at Dajarra and said the service was very well done.
“The kids were amazing, and the wreaths they made were beautiful,” they said.
The Dajarra Anzac Memorial was made possible under the Queensland Government Department of Premier and Cabinet ‘Spirit of Service’ Grant with support from Cloncurry Shire Council.
