A three month prediction from the Bureau of Meteorology suggests above average temperatures and below average rain will continue across summer.
Brisbane meteorologist, Andrew Bufalino, said across December to February there was only a 45 per cent chance the north west would receive above average rainfall.
“The average December rainfall for Mount Isa Mines is 65mm while the Airport’s is 74.9mm. There is only a 50 per cent chance of producing above average rainfall this month,” Mr Bufalino said.
“January sits at 35 per cent chance of reaching above average rainfall with the Mines average sitting at 97.7mm and Airport at 118.6mm.
“In saying that, it only takes one weather system to change these statistics and one significant low could easily change the prediction.”
This week, above 40 degree days are expected to continue, caused by an upper ridge.
“This high pressure system in the upper levels promotes a stable warmer air mass coming to surface,” Mr Bufalino said.
“This predicts temperatures between 40 to 44 for the next seven day forecast.
“This hot mass will blanket north west Queensland with minimal chance of the odd shower in the next two days (Tuesday and Wednesday).”
