The Hughenden Recreational Lake is set to become a reality with the Flinders Shire Council securing a $4.1million grant through the Building Better Regions Fund.
Northern based Government Senator Ian Macdonald said the funding, for the construction of a recreational lake across 219ha, will transform the small outback community.
“This project will not only provide recreational opportunities for locals, it will also create enormous economic opportunities for the region,” Senator Macdonald said.
The $6million project is expected to include four recreational areas, allowing water activities such as rowing, fishing and water skiing.
“I congratulate the Flinders Shire Council, and Mayor Cr Jane McNamara, for all their hard work in putting together such a competitive, comprehensive application.”
Cr McNamara said the announcement of federal funding was a dream come true.
“We’ve made a number of applications in the past and eventually we have succeeded,” Cr McNamara said.
“The lake will be a great boost to the residents generally and local businesses in particular as more tourists will not only visit, but stay longer in our area.”
