A cracking line-up of 90 young bulls consisting of 50 Charolais (20 polled and 13 red factor (five polled red factor) and 40 Charbray (12 polled/scurred) will be offered during John and Roz Mercer’s 14th Annual Kandanga Valley on-property bull sale on Saturday, July 29 from 11am.
Mr Mercer said the stud has achieved success in the show ring in the last 12 months with outstanding Charbray sire, Kandanga Valley Jesuit, winning Grand Champion Bull at the 2016 Brisbane Exhibition.
“Watch out for his sons next year, some of them may be in our show team for Beef 2018,” he said.
More recently Kandanga Valley Langford won Grand Champion Charbray bull at the Gympie show. Langford is catalogued at Lot 53 in the sale and at 18 months, prior to the Gympie show, weighed in at a credible 825kgs.
“He’s possibly the biggest Charbray bull we’ve bred but he’s still correct in structure and a real gentle giant.”
The Charbray sale bulls range from high Brahman content to high Charolais content and there will “be a bull to suit all requirements and environments”.
“Most of the Charbray bulls are also generation bred ‘purebreds’ to breed that little more consistency in their progeny.”
Kandanga Valley doesn’t have a Charolais show team at present, but through the efforts of the Mercer’s many valued clients, the stud has been well represented at commercial shows and store sales where progeny bred by Kandanga Valley bulls have won many classes and championships in Queensland.
“The feedback from past buyers regarding their weaner prices at sales, in comparison to current cattle prices, has been phenomenal.
“Clients have achieved a bonus price in excess of $200/head for Charolais-cross and Charbray weaner steers over their pure Brahman steers the same age.”
The Charolais bulls catalogued are younger than in previous year’s but are moderately framed, thick carcass types that will breed heavy weaners out of Bos Indicus cows, that are keenly sought after by feedlotters and grass fatteners.
All sale bulls are reared in ticky, coastal country and are well proven over 30 years to survive and perform in North Queensland herds.
The bulls are all vaccinated with 7-in-1, 3-day sickness, 3-germ blood, pestivirus and botulism. They will be semen tested prior to sale and be presented with muscle and fat scans, scrotal measurements and weights. The Charolais bulls also have EBV’s available.
