The dogged determination of Mareeba-based stockman Des Burns paid off handsomely when he rode Tassas Pretty Chick to victory at the Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman's Challenge in July.
After missing out on the finals by half a point in 2012 and succumbing to nerves after reaching the finals in 2013, Mr Burns final score of 343 points this year secured him the win in the highly competitive event.
“I got a good cow and a good draw and everything worked out,” Mr Burns said.
Mr Burns purchased Tassas Pretty Chick at the end of 2015 after the Dalby Australian Stock Horse Sale from Biggenden’s Nathan Wilson who owns the legendary stallion Tassa N Smart.
“She’s a super talented little mare, and she gives you a lot of confidence when you’re competing as she never puts a foot wrong.”
The horse breaker by occupation hopes his persistence will inspire other campdrafters to strive towards achieving their goals in the sport.
“All I’d say is don’t give up, always believe in yourself and keep having a go.”
