MEMBERS of the Soroptimist International Focus After Five club met with Townsville co-ordinator for The Pyjama Foundation, Julie-Ann Douglas, at the Tumbetin Tea Rooms at Palmetum in Townsville recently to help raise awareness for the Foundation’s Pyjama Day event.
The club is supporting the program by donating sixty pairs of pyjamas for children aged from one to 15 years which were collected and distributed to foster children around Townsville.
Since its inception, The Pyjama Foundation has inspired over 1700 members of our community nationally to become volunteer Pyjama Angels. The Love of Literacy Program is also backed by literacy experts such as author Mem Fox.
Bronwyn Sheehan founded The Pyjama Foundation in 2004 to make a positive impact on the lives of our community’s most vulnerable children.
Alarmed at the statistics highlighting the poor literacy and numeracy levels of children in care, and how this contributes to a lifetime of disadvantage Bronwyn was determined to make a difference.
She developed a program to ease some of the pressures on foster carers and empower these children to achieve positive outcomes.
Known as The Love of Learning Program, volunteers called Pyjama Angels are matched with a child in care and spend an hour a week focusing on leatrning based activities.
Pyjama Angels read books aloud, play educational games, and help children with their homework but even more importantly they are demonstrating that this child is valued as an individual.
Children in care have the lowest education outcomes nationally. By improving their learning skills The Pyjama Foundation is helping to make a positive life-long impact.
The program is highly effective, with research showing that 90 per cent of carers who foster children in the program have seen the child’s literacy skills improve.
The Townsville branch of the The Pyjama Foundation will be holding a Party on Friday, June 21 at Aitkenvale State School from 6pm to 8pm. Entry will be $2 per person with all funds raised supporting the Love of Learning Program in Townsville.
