On Monday during the Cowboys return to Townsville celebration at 1300SMILES Stadium mayor Jenny Hill presented Matt Scott, Johnathan Thurston and coach Paul Green with the key to the city for their premiership winning effort.
“The fans have been waiting 20 years for this moment, which might be the greatest sporting achievement in N.Q history,” Ms Hill said.
“It was also terrific to see a pair of former Townsville schoolboys in Kyle Feldt and Michael Morgan (Ignatius Park College) bring the magic on that crucial last play in regulation,” she said.
Thurston thanked the legion of loyal Cowboys fans for their ongoing support.
“You’ve all stuck with us through the highs and the lows for two decades, which in many cases meant making long trips to watch our games which we can’t thank you all enough for,” he said.
“I hope you all enjoy this bad boy (the Provan-Summons Trophy) for the next 12 months, and will try our best next year to extend that enjoyment for you all.”
