Earlier: Police are coordinating a search and rescue for a man reported missing from Birdsville since Thursday, November 23.
On Sunday November 19, a 78-year-old man informed the Birdsville Police Station of his travel plans to make his way up the Madigan Line to Camp 17 with the expectation of returning on November 23.
The man has not returned and has not made contact via radio or by other means during this period.
A land search commenced yesterday morning around 11:30am via helicopter, north west of Birdsville in the Simpson Desert, however the man has not been located.
The search and rescue will recommence this morning.
According to 4WD experts a Madigan Line crossing is not a trip to be taken lightly as there is no made track.
The Line is named after explorer and geologist Cecil Thomas Madigan who led a party of nine men across the North Simpson Desert by camels in 1939.
By 4WD it is estimated to take 12-14 days.
