THE Tablelands district has the potential to become the ‘foodie capital of Australia,’ according to Paul West, the star of SBS television series ‘River Cottage Australia.’
Mr West was the keynote speaker at a farmer meets foodie forum held in Mareeba today to celebrate the first national Agriculture Day.
About 40 people heard Mr West, a former chef turned television host, outline the importance of producers building direct relationships with the hospitality industry and consumers.
“Farming has an aspirational quality for people who have nothing to do with it, the love the thought of being outdoors working on the land,” Mr West said.
He explained how marketing products directly to consumers in the digital age could forge great relationships and improve business practices.
Forums are also being held today with successful producers and chefs sitting on the panels.
Guests are being treated to a locally grown lunch and afternoon tea, before local produce is again on show this evening with a Food Truck Feast being held at Ringers Rest from 5.30pm to 9.30pm. Entry is $10 and includes beverage tasting of locally made beer, wine and spirits.
