The Australia-wide postal survey on same sex marriage may have resulted in a resounding yes but Kennedy was one of just 17 out 150 seats that voted against it.
When asked the question “should the law be changed to allow same sex couples to marry?” the yes vote won the survey by 61.6 percentage points to 38.4 nationally – 7,817,247 votes to 4,883,987.
The split was slightly lower in Queensland 60.3% to 39.7% though voters in the seat of Kennedy rejected the proposal by 53% to 47. It was the second highest “no” vote in Queensland with only Maranoa’s 56.1% higher.
Federal member for Kennedy Bob Katter has said he will vote against same sex marriage in parliament despite the postal survey showing Australian voters approve of it.
In a table of responses of all parliamentarians provided to the ABC before the result was announced, Mr Katter is one of only seven who said they would vote no regardless of the result.
