A family of six were airlifted after their car rolled on the Stuart Highway near Emerald Springs last night.
The family, which included three children, needed urgent medical treatment after they were injured in a single vehicle crash about 5km south of Emerald Springs, halfway between Katherine and Darwin.
CareFlight crews joined forces with first responders and clinic staff from Adelaide River, Pine Creek and Katherine to rescue the family.
The flight doctor and flight nurse on board landed on the highway at around 6pm, before airlifting a woman and her baby daughter to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Both patients had sustained head injuries and arrived at RDH in critical but stable conditions.
Meanwhile, a King Air turbo-prop aircraft was tasked to Tindal airstrip near Katherine to medivac a six-week-old boy, an adult with shoulder and head injuries, an adult with a suspected fractured arm and a 10-year-old child to Darwin in stable conditions.
NT Police are calling for witnesses of the crash.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher said the crash occurred around 5pm yesterday.
“A blue Holden Commodore that was travelling south-bound with six occupants, left the road and rolled.Five of the passengers, three of whom were minors, sustained various injuries,” Det. Acting Sen. Sgt Schumache said.
“All passengers were flown to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment.
“The exact circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation.
“Police are calling for anyone who might have witnessed the vehicle before or after the crash to come forward,” he said.
“In particular we ask anyone who may have dash cam footage to contact police on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
CareFlight crews praised the efforts of all first responders, clinic staff, St John Ambulance and NT police on scene.
