The Queensland towns and suburbs where it is raining men

The Brisbane suburb of Wacol had more than double the number of men to women, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.

For every 100 women, there are 238.2 men in Wacol.

But singles in the market for a man should not get too excited; the figure is skewed, as the suburb is home to two male prisons - the Wolston and Brisbane correctional centres.

Similarly, the Glenlee/Rockyview area near Rockhampton has a lot of men - and is home to the Capricornia Correctional Centre.

The Mount Isa region is also swimming in blokes, with 129.5 males per 100 females.

Across Queensland, the ratio is 98.3 males for every 100 females.

Demographer Mark McCrindle said Broadsound/Nebo and Mount Isa's mining industries boosted the number of men in those areas.

But Mount Isa MP Robbie Katter said the statistics did not tell the full story, as men did not "go unhappy here".

"You've only got to go to a race day or a rodeo here to see there's a lot of beautiful females for all the blokes around here," he said.

Mr Katter said plenty of people found love in the Mount Isa area.

"People say they're going to Mount Isa for two to three years for money, and 'I left 20 years later, married with kids'," he said.

"It's kind of a joke around town."

Mr Katter said the town attracted adventurous spirits.

"If you're moving to such a remote location, you're an adventurous spirit and you marry up with other adventurous people out there," he said.

"I think it's a combination of they fall in love with their partner and the community and the lifestyle."

In 2015, Mr Katter spoke about his huge electorate, which covers 570,502 square kilometres, with his travel time making it difficult for him to establish a family.

Social media then turned matchmaker, sparking the #catchakatter hashtag, and he was later engaged to ABC reporter Daisy Hatfield, who he will marry this week.

In 2008, then-Mount Isa mayor John Molony caused outrage after suggesting: "If there are five blokes to every girl, we should find out where there are beauty-disadvantaged women and ask them to proceed to Mount Isa."

The Tablelands also had a high number of men to women at 151.7 to 100, which Mr McCrindle said may be attributed to the agricultural work in the area and a small population.

On the other side of the coin, the top five spots in the state where there are more women than men are all in south-east Queensland.

Coombabah on the Gold Coast could look pretty attractive to lonely single men, with 100 ladies for every 85.6 guys.

The well-heeled suburb of Albion, Newtown in Toowoomba, Chermside and Sippy Downs on the Sunshine Coast all had a similar ratio.

Mr McCrindle said some of those results could be affected by retirement homes, universities and schools.

He said Coombabah had a median age of 47 years old against a state median of 37.

"It's quite an older area in terms of the midpoint in the population and it's largely due to the number of retirement villages in the area," Mr McCrindle said.

"Women outlive men in Australia by about four years and as soon as you have an area with a significantly older population, that tells me it's a story of retirement and aged care."

Albion had a young median age of 32, and St Margaret's Anglican Girls School was in the neighbouring suburb of Ascot, Mr McCrindle said.

"It could just be the number of girls living nearby that's swayed the numbers," he said.

The University of the Sunshine Coast's Sippy Downs campus could sway the numbers towards women, as Mr McCrindle said more women studied at a tertiary level.

The data excludes areas with a population of less than 1000.
