Wildlife officers from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection have removed a 3.6 metre crocodile from Daru Creek, Moresby, approximately 15 kilometres south of Innisfail.
Environment Minister Steven Miles said a member of the public reported seeing the animal on 31 July 2017 on the bank near the road bridge at Gundah Singh Road.
“The same person saw the animal again on Wednesday 2 August 2017 and called EHP on 1300 130 372,” Mr Miles said.
“Wildlife officers attended and confirmed the presence of the crocodile which was targeted for removal in accordance with the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan.”
Mr Miles said recent sighting warning signs had been placed at the road bridge and a trap deployed in the creek to capture the animal.
“The crocodile will be relocated to a crocodile farm or zoo,” Mr Miles said.
“Wildlife officers also provided Crocwise education messages to nearby residents, to remind them of the importance of always being Crocwise in croc country.
“No matter how many crocodiles are removed no waterway in croc country should ever be considered to be free of crocodiles.”
That’s why it’s vital to always be Crocwise in croc country. In particular:
- Obey croc warning signs
- Don’t swim or let domestic pets swim in waters where crocs may live
- Be aware that crocodiles also swim in the ocean
- Stand back from the water when fishing or cast netting
- Never provoke, harass or feed crocs
- Never leave food, fish scraps or bait near the water, a camp site or boat ramp
- Never interfere with or fish or boat near crocodile traps, and
- Always supervise children
