Charters Towers Combined Agents yarded a total of 1346 cattle on August 2, consisting of 569 prime cattle and 777 store cattle.
The prime cattle consisted of 237 bullocks, 29 heifers, 245 cows and 58 bulls, while the store cattle consisted of 563 steers, 204 heifers and 10 cows and calves.
Prime cattle varied greatly, from very good finished bullocks and finished cows yarded to some very light plainer types penned.
Cattle were drawn from Burketown, Tully, Kidston, Malanda, Nelia, Julia Creek, Richmond, Collinsville, Cloncurry, Georgetown, Mt Garnet and local areas.
Bullocks were quoted 10-20c easier, heifers were 1-2c easier and cows were 10-12c easier on last week’s rates.
Prime quotes saw bullocks top at 238c/kg, sold on behalf of JG & CY Dale that weighed 695kg to return $1655 per head.
Best priced trade heifers were presented on account of P & L Fryer which made 257c/kg to weigh 430kg and return $1105 per head.
The top pen of cows were sold by SJ & RJ Neal, for 213c/kg and weighed 565kg to return $1205 per head.
Bulls sold on account of BL & DM Cowie, topped at 250c/kg and weighed 610kg to return $1525 per head.
The store cattle yarded were mostly weaner types with a large portion being young weaner males which met with strong competition especially on the high grade quality types.
A pen of #7 Brahman steers on behalf of BA & LE Corbett, topped at 354c/kg and weighed 179kg and realised $632 per head.
A good pen of 18 heifers on account of W & S Shannon made 298c/kg, weighed 171kg and returned a good average of $508 per head.
Cows and calves sold on behalf of B Witherspoon, returned $1100 per unit.
The next prime and store sale is booked for Wednesday August 9 with 101 prime cattle and 822 store cattle. Lines include 300 good quality crossbred No.6 heifers and 400 x Charbray/Brahman cross mixed sex weaners.
