Roll up, roll up for the annual Hughenden Show!
There was nothing subtle about this year’s annual show with 900 locals and tourists descended on the town for a weekend (June 2,3, 4) of fun and laughter.
With great weather and plenty of action on display there was something for the whole family.
An inaugural camp oven cook off was held this year with seven competitors displaying their cookery skills.
Hughenden Show Society president, Shane McCarthy said although it was the first year they hosted the event, it was a hit among spectators.
“We have heard other shows in the area are thinking of hosting it so there can be a northern competition,” he said.
“We are definitely looking at hosting it again next year, with a hope to draw more competitors.”
The Hughenden Chamber of Commerce jumped on board to support the show this year, to help promote the event. This saw numbers jump an additional 300 head on last year’s gate entry.
“The show was fantastic, exhibitors were up as were guests. It was easily the busiest Friday I can remember in my history with the show,” Mr McCarthy said.
“Remote shows like Hughenden are struggling, in areas to do with drought and the diminishing population in regional and country areas. It is something that is happening Queensland wide.
“We’ve had our ups and downs with the drought and previously we didn’t have any cattle exhibits.
“This year we had stud bulls displayed and for sale on behalf of Katandra Droughtmaster Bull Stud.”
Overall the show committee was happy with this year’s turn out and hope it continues to grow next year.
