JOHN and Tina Bass own Queensland Linen Services Rockhampton, and last week the couple were honoured for a job they do without thought.
Mr and Mrs Bass voluntarily launder linen used by the Royal Flying Doctor Service – something their company has been doing for a decade.
Now they have been awarded the RFDS Local Hero Award.
“We got nominated for a Local Hero Award, but we actually thought we were only coming to a morning tea,” Mr Bass said.
“We voluntarily pick up all the linen that RFDS use on their services, we launder it and bring it back each week, or more often if there’s been a bit of bad luck around.”
The pair have owned the company for two years, and but business began offering the service to the RFDS ten years ago.
“The former owner of the business, their daughter was flown into hospital to Brisbane, and since then the business has provided this to RFDS,” Mr Bass said.
“I used to work for the business and now I own the business – it’s just something we’ve continued on.”
He said while they are definitely not in it for accolades – the award was “shocking, and very humbling”.
”Hopefully we never have to need the service, but we just might one day so we help out any way we can,” Mr Bass said.
