Townsville and Magnetic Island residents are warned to remain alert and stay indoors until Tropical Cyclone Debbie crosses the coast today.
TC Debbie is currently a Category 4 system and is slowly approaching the coast with the latest Bureau Of Meteorology advice expecting it to cross between Ayr and Midge Point around midday.
TDLMG chair and Mayor Cr Jenny Hill warned residents that Townsville remained in the cyclone warning zone despite TC Debbie tracking south of the city.
“Based on the latest advice from the Bureau, Townsville should be prepared for dangerous winds later today,” Cr Hill said.
“TC Debbie is just to our south, and will continue to be a threat until it crosses the coast and moves out of our region.
“While other communities are facing the full force of TC Debbie, Townsville residents should remain vigilant, stick to your cyclone plan and stay at home until the danger passes.”
The Disaster Co-ordination Centre remains operational with all necessary emergency services available. TC Debbie will is be monitored around the clock.
Staff and resources are also on standby to provide recovery support to our neighbouring communities to our south.
