MORE than 300 cane growers have come together in Ayr today to push for an agreement between Wilmar Sugar and Queensland Sugar Ltd (QSL).
With Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce, Queensland leader of the opposition Tim Nicholls, shadow minister for agriculture Dale Last, MP George Christensen, and Senator Matt Canavan with microphones to answer questions, growers were given a chance to voice their concerns about the issue.
Mr Last spoke to applause when he stated that the government and growers alike can “no longer put up with delays”.
“We need to stick together on this and we need to be unified,” he said.
“If six out of the seven milling companies in this state can come together, we ask why can’t Wilmar?”
During the open question time Canegrowers Mackay Chairman Kevin Borg said he had travelled to Ayr with a large group of local growers.
“I think Wilmar has had enough chances,” Mr Borg said.
“I believe in a commercial negotiation, I would have loved to have seen an outcome commercially, but that has not happened.
“It’s up to you guys (government) now to actually act and bring this to an end.”
