THREE Cloncurry Shire councillors will refuse their recommended $996 wage increase, preferring instead to donate the extra funds to a local community group of their choice.
The two per cent wage increase is recommended by the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal, and comes into effect in the new financial year.
It’s the third year in a row the tribunal has suggested an increase.
Mayor Greg Campbell and deputy mayor Dane Swalling, on higher set wages, could not refuse the pay rise due to legislation, according to the council’s director of corporate services Joanne Mooris.
Cr Brad Rix, Vicky Campbell and Damien McGee were able to refuse, but the increase would be considered in the 2017-18 budget. Cr Rix suggested the offered money could be offset into other areas.
“I have to have two minute noodles now. Thanks Brad,” Cr McGee joked. “I have to fill up once a fortnight.” But he seconded the motion.
The mayor said there was awkwardness discussing an increase in remuneration “to some degree”.
“I’m sure every elected representative always feels they are trying to judge their contribution to what the remuneration is,” Cr Campbell said. “All the mayors and councillors put their heart and soul into their positions. It’s not about money.”
Cr Campbell said it would be up to the discretion of councillors to choose “an eligible community group”, but council still had to determine the guidelines on this policy.
Cloncurry councillors are currently paid $49,819, the deputy mayor is paid $57,483, and the mayor is paid $99,638.
