REX Airlines announced their regular services to Mornington Island will be cancelled for a month while the runway is upgraded.
A smaller Saab 340 planes will be used from Mornington Island and will stop in Normanton where the regular Rex service is resumed.
The closure of the runway begins on Thursday, November 10.
The end date of closure is tentatively set for Friday, December 9.
“Customers with existing Rex bookings to (and) from Mornington Island during the period of the runway works are being re-accommodated to Normanton at no additional cost,” the Rex spokesperson said.
“Rex will permit a full refund if the customer chooses not to travel.”
Rex said that the Department of Transport and Main Roads has contacted airline rival Skytrans to operate emergency services between the island and Normanton.
Skytrans would use a restricted length runway too short for Rex aircraft.
Customers making a new booking during the runway construction will have to book seperately with Skytrans between Normanton and Mornington Island.
