AN iconic outback wheelbarrow race in far north Queensland is set for a shake up.
After 13 years, the route of the Great Wheelbarrow Race will be reversed, with the finish line at Mareeba.
Up to now, the race has run from Mareeba to Chillagoe, named the Wheelbarrow Way, to honour the amazing trailblazing feats of early pioneers.
Race committee chair and Mareeba Councillor Nipper Brown said it was time to ‘bring the gold home’ to Mareeba.
“After careful consideration and consultation with key stakeholders, the decision was made to revive and refresh the signature event,” Cr Brown said.
“There will be a number of changes made to the race and it’s going to be exciting having new challenges for all involved.”
Cr Brown said the committee hoped the new direction would reduce safety concerns and generate more interest in the event.
The 144km charity event will run over three days, beginning at Chillagoe on the Friday morning and finishing before a home crowd in Mareeba on the Sunday.
Cr Brown said the committee would trial the turnaround in 2017.
The event will be held on 12-14 May, 2017.
More information will be released in the coming months with nominations opening early next year.
Race enthusiasts are encouraged to keep an eye on the event’s website and Facebook page for updates.
