Burdekin Shire Council, in conjunction with the Bowen Gumlu Growers Association and GrowCom, is hosting the launch of two new programs available to growers.
Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the free event was designed to supply growers with a variety of information about best management practice, capacity building and precision agriculture concepts.
“This is a great opportunity for all our horticulturalists to come along and mingle with other farmers, and sample the local produce,” she said.
“Keith Nobel, a farmer from Tully who has completed PhD research into farmers’ resilience in North Australian agriculture is the guest speaker.
“The Bowen Gumlu Growers Association will present on the horticulture capacity building projects and GrowCom will launch their new Hort 360 program.
“We also have Claredale Pastures Mio College, cooking up a storm to showcase our local produce.”
The Hort 360 program is designed to give growers a 360 degree view of their farm to identify potential risks, capitalise on business opportunities and highlight unnecessary farm expenses.
The Horticulture Growers Social Evening will be held at the Burdekin Theatre on Tuesday, 18 October at 5.30pm.
