While growing vegetables in Mount Isa, the Tagwi family did not expect to find an oversized sweet potato taking over their backyard.
The sole sweet potato grew to a whopping six kilograms before owner Lloyd Tagwi removed it from his vegetable garden.
Mr Tagwi originally planted the sweet potatoes in his backyard to teach his children where food came from.
“I planted them in December last year but found this one growing only a few months ago. When I planted them I did not realise it could grow to be this big,” he said.
Although Mr Tagwi was impressed at his effort at growing the oversized spud, it did not break the world record. The Guinness World Record was captured in Spain in 2004 with the heaviest sweet potato on record weighing 37 kilograms.
Despite not breaking the record, Mr Tagwi said his family planned on eating the spud although it may take a while.
