Ian and Anne Galloway aren’t accustomed to postponing their spring bull sale due to flooding but that’s exactly the situation they found themselves in this week.
After receiving more than 112mm in four days on their property 10km south of Roma, the Galloway’s were forced to postpone their annual bull sale set for September 22 and set a new date of Friday October 14.
With September often one of the driest months of the year, Mr Galloway said it was a unique circumstance.
“Our homestead and cattle yards aren’t far away from where the Chinchinbilla and the Bungeworgorai Creeks join and with cattle on the other side of the creek and many of our clients in the same situation it was a decision we had to make,” Mr Galloway said.
“It’s unusual to see this kind of rain in September – we’re up to about six-and-a-half inches for the month now.”
The Galloways received the bulk of their rain on Saturday night when about 90mm was dumped on Duarran and with more rain forecast for Tuesday night, the decision was made to swim the bulls across the flooded Chinchinbilla Creek on Tuesday to higher ground.
Fortunately, only about 16mm fell at Duarran on Tuesday evening and the team is now busy preparing for the sale on October 14 when they will offer 65 black and red Brangus bulls and 30 EU accredited Brangus females.
