Graziers will learn when and how they can use hay bales, netting and other materials for cost-effective gully rehabilitation at the NQ Dry Tropics Gully Remediation Field Day being held at Strathbogie Station in the Bowen district, on Tuesday, October 5 from 9am.
Graziers are invited to register for the event that will give them an opportunity to explore how erosion can be repaired using materials and equipment already available on-property under the guidance of soil conservation expert John Day.
Participants will gain a greater understanding of the impacts that sediment from gullies has on the Great Barrier Reef and how landholders, in particular, can develop practical skills to construct some low-cost erosion control structures.
Mr Day will discuss the causes of erosion, techniques that can be used to rehabilitate eroded areas, and some practical ways to treat active gullies.
Attendees will participate in the construction of suitable cost-effective erosion control structures in a black soil gully under his guidance.
“The practical construction of silt traps using various materials including sticks, netting, hay bales and coir logs will be a feature of the day,” he said.
