City cousins will be able to join in one of the biggest shindigs in the west this year by taking advantage of a two-day package offered by Sheehan Events to attend the opening of the Stockman’s Hall of Fame Entertainment Centre in Longreach at the beginning of October. If they do, they’ll be among the first to experience the excitement of the purpose-built $2.5m venue for everything from campdrafting and bull sales to concerts and sit-down dinners. ASHOF CEO Lloyd Mills said this week that despite a couple of rain delays, the centre was due for completion on September 23. “I think everyone will be really pleased with the final product,” he said. The 60m long arena is entered through a traditional timber homestead facade, which opens up to tiered grandstand seating, a fully-licenced bar and an eating place, complete with 91 LED lights of international standing. “We’ve built something mobile so we can move things around to cater equally for a bull sale or a sit-down dinner,” Lloyd said. “We were very careful of quality when we added something on to the Hall of Fame brand, and I think people will be very proud of it.” The action-packed opening weekend begins with a soft opening for locals on Friday, September 30, when Trevor Hendy and fellow ironmen from the Surfers Paradise Lifesaving Club will be out for a beach volleyball showcase. After a kids’ triathlon on Saturday, Regional Communities Minister Fiona Nash will open the the centre on Sunday, October 2. Punters will be able to watch the NRL grand final on the big screen before the Wolf Brothers and Lee Kernaghan christen the new centre with a show to remember.
