Light feeder steers set a new yard record for the fourth week in a row at the Charters Towers store and prime sale held on Wednesday.
The record setting pen of Brahman steers were sold by RM Toohey, Nunkumbil, Pentland for 423¢/kg to weigh 185kg and return $786/head.
In total 2892 cattle consisting of 1627 Prime Cattle and 1265 Store Cattle were yarded for the sale. The prime cattle section consisted of 733 bullocks, 194 heifers, 626 cows and 74 bulls, while store lines comprised of 879 steers, 314 heifers and 72 x 72 cows and calves.
Slaughter cattle yarded included good runs of bullocks from the North followed up with lines of finished cows. The yarding was drawn from Chillagoe, Burketown, Einasleigh, Hughenden, Mount Isa, local and coastal areas.
Bullocks were quoted 10c easier, heifers were down 5c and cows were unchanged ion price from the previous sale.
Six heifers to 440kg averaged 278c, while those over 440kg reached 295c to average 246c.
Cows to 400kg made 247c to average 222c, while those over 400kg hit 266c to average 240c.
Steers and bullocks over 500kg made 307c to average 280c while a lone steer under 500kg made 274c. Bulls over 450kg peaked at 249c to average 230c.
Brahman bullocks sold by G W Carrick, Maitland, Einasleigh topped at 283c to weigh 568kg and return $1610, who also sold a run of 240 Brahman bullocks which made 276c, weighing 483kg to return $1334.
The best priced trade heifers were sold by Kanda Pty Ltd, which made 295c to weigh 377kg and return $1113, and the top pen of cows were sold by Glenell Grazing, Avocavale Station, Ravenswood for 256c to weigh 537kg and return $1376.
A pen of 10 cows sold by KA Knuth Investments, Glencoe, Charters Towers made 256c to weigh 532kg and return $1363, while bulls sold by Arthur Shepherd topped at 248c to weigh 775kg and $1923.
Store cattle consisted of lines of heavier feeder steers and heifers with smaller lots of younger weaner cattle. A full buying panel competed strongly for all cattle on offer.
Steers to 200kg made 423c to average 379c, 200-320kg steers hit 416c to average 344c, 320-400kg steers peaked at 342c to average 322c and four steers over 400kg averaged 330c.
Heifers to 200kg reached 328c to average 313c, 200-320kg heifers topped at 320c to average 283c, 320-370kg heifers peaked at 326c to average 302c and five heifers over 370kg hit 322c.
A good pen of Brahman heifers sold by Koolyn Pty Ltd, Charters Towers made 328c to weigh 130kg and return a good average of $426, while 42 x 42 cows and calves sold by Kenny Cameron, Charters Towers returned $1400/unit.
