The Burdekin Shire Council has held preliminary planning discussions with Wilmar Sugar regarding cane haulage options should wet weather continue to hamper cane harvesting this crushing season.
Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the talks were precautionary only, but warranted if further rain eventuated.
“Council is acutely aware of the flow-on effect unseasonal rain will have on the local economy,” she said.
“If cane is left unharvested in the paddocks it won’t just affect the farmers, harvester operators and haul-out contractors, but all who live in the Burdekin.
“We want to work collaboratively with growers and the mills and will consider alternate arrangements for transfers of cane from paddock to siding if requested.
“Initial approaches for these arrangements will be through Wilmar Sugar.”
Cr McLaughlin said one of Council’s concerns regarding further unseasonal rains was the safety of road users.
