A total of 1977 head of cattle were yarded for the Charters Towers store and prime sale held on Wednesday which featured top quality feeder lines which sold to levels never before seen in Charters Towers.
Most store categories crossed the $3/kg threshold due to the heavy bidding from a large buyer gallery; the prime lines were comprised of mixed quality bullocks that sold to an improved market and a very good line-up of cows met with solid competition from the six meat processors in attendance.
The yarding consisted of 714 prime cattle comprising 67 bullocks, 48 heifers, 558 cows and 41 bulls, and 1263 store cattle which included 663 steers, 431 heifers, 163 mickeys and six cows and calves.
Bullocks were up 8-10c, heifers were 10-12c dearer and Cows were 10-12c higher on last week’s rates.
The yarding was drawn from Chillagoe, Forsayth, Normanton, Croydon, Pentland, Greenvale, Collinsville, local and coastal areas.
Heifers to 440kg reached 245c to average 232c, while those over 440kg made 251c to average 246c.
Cows to 400kg topped at 245c to average 213c, while those over 400kg hit 270c to average 248c.
Steers and bullocks to 500kg peaked at 279c to averaged 255c, and those over 500kg crested at 297c to average 279c. Bulls over 450kg made 258c to average 240c.
Bullocks topped at 294c for two good bullocks sold by SJ O’Sullivan, Bundabaroo, Belyando that weighed 560kg to return $1647/head, and the best priced trade heifers were sold by Ken Peace which made 251c to to weigh 480kg and return $1205.
The top pen of cows were sold by RJ, JJ & SR Hyden, Old Victoria Downs, Charters Towers for 270c weighing 496kg to return $1341, and bulls sold by Cunningham Cattle Co, Esmeralda, Richmond, averaged 258c and weighed 690kg to return $1781.
Steers to 200kg reached 370c to average 372c, 200-320kg steers made 370c to average 334c, 320-400kg steers topped at 343c to average 314c and those over 400kg hit 290c to average 283c.
Heifers to 200kg made 346c to average 333c, 200-320kg heifers peaked at 330c to average 294c and those between 320-370kg topped at 302c to average 295c. Mickey bulls to 440kg reached 378c to average 330c.
A line of 166 steers sold by Hammer Grazing Trust, Glendillon, Charters Towers, averaged 378c and weighed 170kg to return $643, while a line of 69 heifers sold by KLD Pastoral Co, Kirkland Downs, Charters Towers made 346c weighed 178kg and returned $615.
