A 1.4kg monster gold nugget is among a collection of nuggets on sale at the TerrEstrial Visitor Information Centre in Georgetown.
The nugget – believed to be worth $200,000 – is part of a consignment sourced within a 40km radius of the town by a local prospector.
TerrEstrial Georgetown manager Tamsin Alderton said while it was unlikely the $200,000 gold nugget would sell anytime soon, it was certainly a good talking point.
“There are tiny nuggets half the size of your fingernail starting at around $100 available as well as larger 50 cent piece size items priced at around $3200,” Ms Alderton said.
“The local jeweller moulds his own gold to make jewellery for TerrEstrial and we have gemstones available supplied by Mt Surprise Gems giving us a range of items unique to this region.”
The centre is an accredited visitor information centre and home to the Ted Elliot Mineral Collection, which was Australia’s largest private collection of minerals, gemstones and fossils from around the world before being purchased by the Etheridge Shire Council and placed on display in 2003.
An outdoor display of mining equipment and a peace monument will be completed at the visitor centre later this year.
