ALL roads lead to Mt Garnet, southwest of Cairns, come Friday as the famous races and rodeo weekend returns bigger and better.
After two years apart – a result of the Newman Government’s decision to move the May Day public holiday in 2014 – the two events are back together.
Festivities at the LD Lucey Memorial Park kick off Friday night with a meet and greet at the Mt Garnet Golf Club where a calcutta, barbecue, wildlife races and fundraiser auction will be held.
Action heads to the racetrack on Saturday for a seven-race program, which kicks off with the first race at 12.30 and final race at 4.55pm, before a boxing tournament and cabaret rounds out the day’s entertainment. TAB facilities will be available.
On Sunday, the Mt Garnet Rodeo Association will host its annual ABCRA-affiliated rodeo together with a trade show, auction and cabaret.
Feature events include the $3000 open bull ride, $1500 open saddle bronc ride and $1500 open bare back.
Monday sees a turf club members’ meeting, family fund day and recovery markets.
Mareeba band Careless will entertain.
