THE Rosenberg family at Greenwood north of Oakey is protecting its milking herd from potentially lethal mycotoxins with the inclusion of a toxin deactivator in all of its grain based feed rations.
The Rosenbergs, who milk 700 Holstein cows through a 32-a-side herringbone on their 1012-hectare farm Silver Leigh, use the purpose designed Alltech product and DHA rural supplied, Mycosorb A+ Pellet to protect their herd health from potentially lethal mycotoxins produced for moulds that are surprisingly often found in feed ingredients including grain and silage.
“We see it as a pretty good insurance policy,” Mr Rosenberg said. “If we see mould on feed of course we don’t feed it, but it is what we don’t see that is the real concern.
“Saving even a couple of cows would more than pay for the Mycosorb.”
The Rosenberg’s herd is producing an averaging 22 litres/day with a very impressive 4.18 per cent fat and 3.35pc protein levels.
Mr Rosenberg said he was a firm believer in having forage crop a major component of the herd’s diet.
