THE Cloncurry Precinct was the venue for the Cloncurry Drought Buster Ball last week staged as an opportunity to raise funds for local charities such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service and 300 plus locals dressed in formal attire turned up in support.
The Ball was hosted by the Quamby Rodeo Club as a charity fund raiser after the club was unable to stage the annual Quamby Rodeo due to the drought.
“We usually raise a fair amount money at the rodeo for the RFDS and because we couldn’t hold the rodeo this year the committee decided to host the Ball to raise funds,” President of Quamby Rodeo committee, Anthony McMillan said.
Mayor of Cloncurry Shire Andrew Daniels said that apart from the fund raising function of the Drought Buster Ball, it was also a diversion for graziers and business from the grind of riding out the drought.
“These events for a few hours take the pressure off families struggling to cope with the drought and the stress that comes with it,” Mayor Daniels said.
“Whether those families are livestock producers of business that rely on the cattle industry for survival.”
Sponsors were only too willing to get on board and the list was long and included BHP, MMG Dugald River, Just Country Boot, Virgin Airlines, Lucas Total Contract Solutions, Westpac, Noodle Box.
The Cloncurry Drought Buster Ball proved a great success as has the building it was staged in, the Cloncurry Precinct which has recently won the 2013 Building excellence Award in the $5M-$20M category.
