THIS year has been one of highs and lows as far as the beef industry is concerned. Through the constant sell off over the last two years due to extended periods of below average rainfall, we are currently getting the national herd down to fairly low levels. Roma saleyards has averaged weekly around the 9000 head mark until October. November yardings have dropped to almost half this due to lack of numbers. The high turn off has driven price fluctuations throughout the year. Thankfully the trend has been an upward trajectory for most of the year. The EYCI is perilously close to the 600c/kg mark at the moment.
Seasonal conditions locally in the Maranoa are varied but in the main, most are not in too bad of shape. There has been a welcome above average harvest in the district, with some record tonnages achieved in small pockets. The flow on effect of this of course is of a positive nature in many ways for most producers, with the feedlot sector being one of the beneficiaries. This in turn gives options for producers needing to market livestock. The feed on market is so integral to managing the average seasons allowing producers options prior to getting a beast off grass or crop as a finished animal.
By now everyone in the industry will be using the latest C0413 version of the NVDs. To ensure maximum competition for livestock it is essential LPA NVDs are compliant, fully completed and legible. With new markets coming on line the integrity of our industry sits behind this current version. New and existing buyers of our product put enormous faith in the integrity of this system, hence helping us retain existing markets and gain access to new markets.
