Lighthouse saved as Barrenjoey fire continues

Eighty firefighters and three helicopters worked to contain a fire across the Barrenjoey headland, saving the 1800s heritage-listed lighthouse at Palm Beach.

NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Anthony Clark said the building was mostly fine although the fire did get into the roof of a part of the complex.

''It appears that one building in the lighthouse complex has sustained some damage. The building itself has been saved by firefighters,'' he said. The RFS downgraded the alert for the fire after 4pm on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, the fire cut off access to the lighthouse and people already in the area were advised to take shelter at the lighthouse.

Avalon resident and Fairfax journalist Rachael Oakes-Ash said there was a convoy of fire engines and police cars leading to the fires. Helicopters did not just drop water around the blaze, but appeared to be dumping water on the buildings to save them, she said.

''You could see this massive plume of smoke,'' Oakes-Ash said. It looked like something exploded. ''It was surreal, because people were playing in the ocean and just arriving at the beach as this was happening in the background.''

Traffic lights stopped working in the area as electricity was cut, also affecting businesses and residential properties.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Rural Fire Service said bush fires that had threatened properties near Taree and the Great Lakes were under control on Saturday evening. But he said 60 fires were still burning around the state and 20 of those remained out of control.

''With better weather over the next couple of days, we hope to contain those fires … before a possible return to weather conditions similar to today later in the week,'' the spokesman said.

Total fire bans remain in place for Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, north coast, New England and northern slopes regions.
