CHARTERS Towers woman Kellie Stephenson is heading for home with husband Corey, son Zac and a new baby on the way after serving as a Dometic Follow the Sun 2014 ambassador – and covering an impressive 10,073 kilometres.
The road trippers spent three months touring Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia after being one of three couples chosen as 2014 Dometic Follow The Sun ambassadors. Each couple received a luxury caravan makeover and an expenses-paid road trip worth $35,000.
Along the way Kellie and Corey were delighted to discover they were expecting a sibling for their son Zac and are now enroute to Townsville to prepare for the new arrival, due January 6, and to reunite with family and friends.
Kellie blogged about their adventures on the Dometic Follow The Sun website and on her own Blonde Nomad Facebook page.
“It’s so hard to choose a favourite spot, there were so many, but Mount Hotham was so different to what we’re used to. We went four wheel driving in the high country and it was wonderful to see lush green pasture considering we’ve been in drought for so long,” she said.
The couple will spend the next few months in Townsville, where they will celebrate the arrival of their new baby while housesitting for friends. Kellie’s parents remain in Charters Towers, and Kellie and Corey are looking forward to a reunion.
But the travel bug has well and truly bitten, with the family also planning to trade their current caravan in for a larger, family-sized model and hit the road again in March 2015, for at least a year.
“Fingers crossed this new baby loves the road as much as Zac! He knows where all the places are on the map of Australia and says, ‘We can’t go home yet Mum, we need to go to Arnhem Land and I want to go barra fishing in the Territory!’ He also wants to swim with the sharks at Port Lincoln and is practising his diving!”
Kellie said the past 12 months of life on the road had allowed her and Corey to ponder the important things in life.
“We might not be rich in dollars, but we are rich in experiences, health and happiness. I love living a life that is not defined by a bank balance. I'm glad we took the plunge and decided to travel, things you can buy, time you cannot, so do what makes you happy before it's too late.”
