ATHLETES from Mount Isa to Charters Towers are readying themselves for the 10 days of sport at the Glencore Great Western Games which will be held for the fourth time from 17 to 26 July 2015.
With the dates being announced sports will be called upon to “host” events across the region. The North Queensland Sports Foundation will auspice the events which will invite clubs and associations in Mount Isa as well as the North West “corridor” of Cloncurry, Julia Creek, Hughenden and Charters Towers to participate and put on events.
Glencore has returned as the naming rights sponsor of the multi-sport event. The Mount Isa City Council, and each of the member Councils of the aforementioned towns have thrown their support also behind the event. Mount Isa will be the focus on the first night as the city holds the Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 16 as the precursor to the sporting festival.
The Games are a truly unique experience, as a whole host of sports will be staged as part of one overall event. Delivered over a distance of approximately one thousand kilometres, the region is expecting over 2000 participants in the events across the five centres.
The North Queensland Sports Foundation announcement and confirmation of the dates for the Glencore Great Western Games in 2015 continue to build upon a strong tradition which is fast building into an iconic event. More importantly the event is an opportunity for communities to come together, with a strong economic benefit being delivered to communities through games participants attracted to the area.
