THE popular tractor pull will return to the Rotary FNQ Field Days in May.
It was held for the first time in 2013 and was an overwhelming success.
Vintage and classic tractors with engine capacity of up to 80 horse power will pull a sled along a 120m track. Competition classes range in 10 horse power increments, from 20 to 80. Tractors must fit into the vintage category for those manufactured in 1959 or earlier or classic for tractors made between 1960 and 1973.
Work is well underway on building a purpose-built, five-tonne transfer sled.
Tractor buffs like Kazim Mehmet, who won a category with his Caterpillar Dozer in 2013, are currently preparing their machines for the May outing.
“Refurbishing dozers is not just a hobby I enjoy,” Kazim said.
“I have a strong passion for them and highly enjoy it. It always is a hard project to conquer but in the end it was worth the final product and that feeling of accomplishment,” he said.
Kazim is working on a John Deere 40C Crawler to enter into this year’s competition. He has rebuilt the engine and sourced parts from America.
Rotary FNQ Field Days Committee chair Ida Portella said the tractor pull was a magnificent drawcard for the event and was extremely popular with visitors.
“This year, we are investing in making the tractor pull bigger and better, with an improved sled, a dedicated emcee and a better demonstration area,” Ms Portella said.
The field days, being held on May 27-28 is a joint initiative of the Tableland Rotary Clubs of Atherton and Mareeba.
