CHARTERS Towers combined agents yarded a total of 1141 cattle at the store and prime sale held on July 1.
The yarding was comprised of 642 prime cattle and 499 store cattle.
Prime cattle yarded included 50 bullocks, 121 heifers, 430 cows and 41 bulls.
Cattle consisted of smaller lots of mostly good finished prime cows and heifers along with a few bullocks and steers.
The yarding was drawn from Home Hill, Gumlu, Dalbeg, Ayr, Ravenswood, Richmond, Einasleigh, Forsayth, Chillagoe, Georgetown, Mt Garnet, local and coastal areas.
The market was good with all classes improving considerably. Bullocks were quoted 8-10c/kg dearer, heifers were 10-12c dearer and cows were 3-4c dearer and bulls were 15-18c dearer than the previous sale.
Heifers to 440kg made 191c to average 174c, no heifers over 440kg yarded.
Cows to 400kg topped at 185c to average 151c, while those over 400kg reached 205c to average 178c.
Steers and bullocks peaked at 201c to average 186c, while those over 500kg hit 206c to average 199c.
Bulls over 450kg made 211c to average 180c.
A pen of eight bullocks sold by Pedracini Grazing, Scartwater, Charters Towers, made 201c to weigh 518kg and return $1043/head, and the top priced trade heifers sold by N Burge, Richmond, made 191c to weigh 433kg and return $828.
The top pen of 12 cows were sold by Mt Douglas Pastoral Co, Mt Douglas, Charters Towers, for 205c to weigh 543kg and return $1114, while bulls sold by KP Whiting, Woodstock, topped at 182c and weighed 790kg to return $1439.
Store cattle yarded consisted of 280 steers and 219 heifers.
Store cattle were drawn from all local and coastal areas and the market was much improved with steers up by 2-4c and heifers unchanged in price from the previous sale. No cows or cows and calves were yarded for the sale.
Steers to 200kg made 209c to average 185c, 200-320kg steers reached 221c to average 191c and 320-400kg steers topped at 228c to average 181c, no steers over 400kg yarded.
Heifers to 200kg peaked at 202c to average 177c, no heifers between 200-320kg were yarded, 320-370kg heifers hit 193c to average 165c, and those over 370kg made 199c to average 179c.
A pen of 16 Brahman steers sold by Stringer Family Trust, Charters Towers, made 221c to weigh 176kg and return $377, while a good pen of 25 no-4 heifers sold by John Payne, Home Hill, made 188c to weigh 250kg and return $470.
