SOME positive signs for the Northern cattle industry were apparent at the fifth annual Charters Towers Invitational Brangus Sale held at the Dalrymple Saleyards.
In summary, 67 bulls sold for a total of $221,500 for an average of $3306/head and an excellent 93 per cent clearance rate.
The sale produced a strong result for vendors and great purchasing opportunities for bidders.
Sale coordinator Troy Trevor, Queensland Rural, Charters Towers, said the general consensus from vendors was that they were very happy with the sale results.
“Factoring in the tough selling conditions at present caused by the drought, the sale proceeded remarkably well with most of the vendors getting decent prices for their bulls, and nearly all of the selling their entire sale teams,” Mr Trevor said.
“From what I’ve heard around the traps, at this point in time if a seller can make a decent average and totally disperse their draft, then it’s considered a victory. Unfortunately, that’s just the way things are for now,” he said.
The sale topped twice at $6500 with the first high being reached early in the sale when lot 10, Pheasant Creek G78, from Pheasant Creek Brangus, Thendara, Wowan, sold to Clair Besch, Dululu, Rockhampton.
It was the sole sale purchase for Ms Besch, who said she’d had her eye on the 28-month old for a while and was taken with his great length and bone.
Pheasant Creek vendor Brad Saunders success continued with Lot 11, Pheasant Creek G18 (P) selling to Kenwill Holdings, Toorilla Plains, Stanage, for $6000. All up he sold 11 bulls for $40,500.
Mr Saunders said he was very happy with the sale result, adding that he thought the Queensland Rural team did a great job of organising and running the sale.
The second $6500 bull Jett 46 G43, presented by Mark and Donna Reid, Jett Brangus, Paeroma, Emerald went under the hammer in Lot 69. He sold to Ross and Matthew Makeering, Forrester Grazing Company, Emerald who said they had been drawn to the 26 month old bull due to his excellent all-round attributes but in particular his great temperament and weight for age.
The Reid’s had an excellent sale with Jett Brangus Stud topping the sale average at $4450 and they also had the top sale gross selling all 10 of their bulls for $44,500.
Peter and Joy Newman, Rathlyn Brangus, Thendara, Emerald, were the top volume vendors of the sale, selling 13 head for $39,000.
Brad and Briony Comiskey, and Dennis and Claire Couper, Lunar Brangus, Mostly Hills, Springsure, sold 10 bulls for $35,000, while Nev and Megan Hansen, Oaklands Brangus, Oaklands, Kalapa, sold nine bulls for $26,000.
Rob Dunn, Silent Grove Brangus, Murray View, Mt Ossa, sold nine head for $23,500, and Tony and Bryce Fernie, Boombah Brangus Bulls, Boombah Station, ingo, sold five bulls for $13,000.
The top volume buyer of the sale was Shane O’Brien, Kinrara Station, Mt Garnet, took home a very well brought draft of 16 bulls. Other volume buyers were Forrester Grazing, Forrester, alpha, who purchased nine bulls; and Kenwill Holdings, Toorilla Plains, Stanage; Zonia Downs Pastoral Company, Zonia Downs, Julia Creek; and Murphy and Murphy, Gregory Springs, Hughenden, all purchased four bulls.
