CHARTERS Towers combined agents yarded a total of 1814 cattle at the store and prime sale held on March 11.
The yarding was comprised of 832 prime cattle and 981 store cattle.
Prime cattle yarded consisted of 235 bullocks, 143 heifers, 411 cows and 43 bulls.
The yarding met with good competition with a bigger gallery of buyers than the last sale despite the dry conditions overall continuing in the Charters Towers region. Cattle were drawn from: Winton, Pentland, Balfes Creek, Forsayth, Georgetown, Trebonne, Yabulu, Gumlu, Inkerman, Upper Stone, Townsville and the Charters Towers area.
Bullocks were quoted unchanged, heifers were unchanged and cows were 15-18c easier on the last sale’s rates.
Heifers to 440kg made 152c to average 136c, while those over 440kg reached 173c to average 168c.
Cows to 400kg topped at 128c to average 110c, while those over 400kg hit 170c to average 137c.
Steers and bullocks to 500kg peaked at 210c to average 158c, while those over 500kg made 206c to average 187c.
Bulls over 450kg hit 172c to average 146c.
Bullocks topped at 210c for an ox sold by RL and JA Richards, Mountainview, Toonpan, that weighed 490kg to return $1030/head, while KJ and BI Brown, Charters Towers, sold two bullocks for 206c, weighing 585kg to return $1206.
The best priced trade heifers were sold by Devonport Cattle Co, Saltwater, Mingela, which made 173c to weigh 455kg and return $788, they also sold the top pen of 13 cows for 168c, weighing 492kg to return $828.
Bulls sold by RJ and DM Regan, Charters Towers, topped at 172c, weighing 760kg to return $1308.
Store cattle yarded consisted of 365 steers, 483 heifers and 121 cows and calves.
Store cattle were of mixed quality generally with any quality lines especially heifers selling to respectable rates on a day where the weather dominated discussion rather than the rates in the market place.
Store steers sold to 211c, store heifers made 173c and cows and calves averaged $410/unit topping at $995.
Steers to 200kg topped at 180c to average 168c, 200-320kg steers made 211c to average 176c, 320-400kg steers reached 177c to average 163c, and those over 400kg averaged 164c.
Heifers to 200kg hit 158c to average 134c, 200-320kg heifers peaked at 173c to average 145c, 320-370kg heifers topped at 148c to average 143c, and those over 370kg made 153c to average 138c.
A pen of 38 steers sold by AB and PS Stanford, Upper Stone, made 211c, weighing 209kg to return $441, and a good pen of 36 Brangus heifers sold by G and K Forster, Stoneington, Pentland, made 173c, weighing 247kg to return $427.
Seven stud Grey Brahman cows and calves sold by G Brown, Forsayth, returned $995 per unit, and WF Prichard, Nine Mile, Charters Towers, sold a line of 40 young Grey Brahman cows and 40 calves for $630.
PL and HM Cook, Dillon Creek, Charters Towers, sold a good line of 24 crossbred cows with 24 Brangus calves at foot for $630.
