PREPARATION works on the site of the Burdekin Shire’s multi-purpose exhibition hall/cyclone shelter facility are complete.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Bill Lowis said the Ayr Showground site had been a hive of activity over the past few weeks.
“Cyclone Ita caused a small delay with the works on the 1m high mound for the facility, but that should be completed this week,” he said.
“A few of the trees had to be removed to allow access the site and the overhead electricity wires and power poles have been removed and replaced with underground electricity.
“Council has installed a new water service for the shelter.
“An additional 200m2 storage shed associated with the shelter is nearing completion.”
Cr Lowis said the $2.7 million facility would be completed by mid-November this year.
The Burdekin multi-purpose exhibition hall/cyclone shelter facility measures 65m x 26m and will have an internal open area of about 50m x26m. It will be constructed of concrete panel walls and is designed to withstand a Category 5 cyclone.
