TENDERS are now open for the construction of the second stage of the Cloncurry Weir which will incorporate a fish passageway, bank protection and profiling works to obtain optimal raw water storage capacity for the Cloncurry community.
Deputy Mayor Bob McDonald said the lack of rain in recent years has prompted Council to have a serious look at water infrastructure planning.
“Council had to sit back and look at existing infrastructure and what would happen if that existing infrastructure failed,” Cr McDonald said.
“The Cloncurry Weir is a long-term water storage solution for this community,” he said.
“Stage 2 construction will build on works already completed, to incorporate a fish ladder, bank protection and profiling works.
“Once completed, the Weir will secure an additional 700 mega litres of water for Cloncurry.
“An important condition of the contract includes considerable use of local resources.
“A criterion of the tender assessment process is local participation.
“Securing local procurement is a priority for Council for all of its projects, where possible.”
It is expected the contractor will commence in October, with the works to be completed by early December.
Interested parties are invited to tender the works on the Cloncurry Weir-Construction of Spillway/Fishway.
Tenders close 2pm Monday September 8, 2014, and can be lodged at the Cloncurry Shire Council Administration Office, 38-46 Daintree Street, Cloncurry 4824.
