ATHERTON'S Carinya Home for the Aged is celebrating a milestone in its $15 million redevelopment project, with work on
stage one nearly complete and stage two about to start.
Chief Executive Officer Sue Nicholls said construction of stage one would be completed by the end of the month, paving the
way for work to start on the redevelopment of Jim Chapman Lodge (the Hostel) and Wadley Court (nursing home).
“We are proud to be celebrating the completion of the first stage of the redevelopment,” Ms Nicholls said.
“Stage one is a state-of-the-art facility that will continue the vital service that Carinya has been providing to the Tablelands
community for nearly 40 years," she said.
“This is a significant milestone not only for Carinya but for the entire Tablelands region and ensures that our Home continues to
meet the needs of the future ageing population.”
Ms Nicholls said once completed, residents from Jim Chapman Lodge and Wadley Court would move temporarily into the new
facility so redevelopment work can begin on those other two buildings.
“Redevelopment works on stage two will involve the demolition and replacement of Jim Chapman Lodge resident, dining,
lounge and activity areas,” Ms Nicholls said.
“The kitchen, administration and maintenance facilities will be upgraded to cater for an increased care population.
“Wadley Court involves a total internal refurbishment, with shared rooms being converted to single rooms.”
Stage one – which will be officially named the Enid Collins Lodge in memory of Atherton accountant and long time treasurer of
Carinya, Enid Collins – will house 45 resident rooms over two levels.
Each floor has its own dining, activity and private lounge areas. A large training room and staff area has also been incorporated.
Construction on the remaining stages is expected to be completed by August 2015.
