A MAREEBA-based Ergon Energy work crew have been thanked by Queensland Police for their quick thinking and assistance at the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Cape York earlier this month.
The crew were heading back to their depot when they encountered the aftermath of a serious traffic crash 85 kilometres south of Coen on August 8.
Ergon technical service persons David Hine, Jason Shorey and Martin McDonald along with distribution powerline apprentice Michael Martin were among the first on the scene and rendered basic first aid whilst also helping ensure safety at the crash site and communicating with emergency services.
Queensland Police have also recognised the efforts of the team in reassuring a nine year old boy who was trapped in a vehicle. They also assisted with extracting the boy from the vehicle.
Acting Senior Constable Derek Hicks from Coen Police Station described the team’s assistance as “absolutely invaluable”.
“It is without doubt, their professionalism, care and dedication resulted in a positive outcome in all involved surviving the crash and the boy being safely removed from the vehicle,” he said.
“I know the family of those injured wanted us to pass on their heartfelt thanks.”
Ergon customer delivery manager Charlie Casa said that while delivering life-saving heroics wasn’t necessarily part of a normal day’s work for field crews, he was none-the-less proud of his team’s efforts and professionalism in stepping up on the day.
“We live and work in regional Queensland and know the challenges this can present,” Mr Casa said.
“This was one of those days when our crew’s training, abilities and common sense saved lives,” he said.
“I’m incredibly proud of them as is everyone in Ergon.”
