BEEF cattle producers from across Cape York will converge in Laura next week for Cape York Natural Resource Management’s Beef Cattle Producer Roundtable.
The two day event will feature topics critical to the big issues facing Cape York’s beef cattle industry including changes to lease arrangements, fire management, pest and weed management and business development.
Cape York NRM’s Primary Industries sector director Emma Jackson, said the roundtable was an important opportunity for Cape York beef cattle producers to come gather to discuss issues impacting the industry.
“There are a lot of challenges for beef cattle producers on Cape York, and events like this give us the opportunity to hear about what others are doing, to have conversations about what’s going on for us, and hopefully to come up with some innovative solutions to issues like getting our cattle to markets,” Ms Jackson said.
“Fire management is also one of the major issues for all landholders on Cape York, and every year millions of hectares can get burnt by wildfire. We hope by working together we can better manage fire on Cape York and save properties thousands of dollars in lost time and resources,” she said.
This is the second Beef Cattle Industry Roundtable hosted by Cape York NRM and it will be held at Laura Community Hall from 8am to 5pm on August 4-5.
Cape York NRM’s Sustainable Industries Officer, Michael Goddard, said Cape York NRM is bringing government and industry representatives to Cape York to work on solutions to the long term problems impacting the beef cattle industry.
“Our pastoralists on Cape York have been telling us they want solutions, not consultations. So we are bringing people to the table that have both industry experience and the answers to their questions,” Mr Goddard said.
